A symposium on feminist insight and activism in South Africa and the United States, which will serve as a tribute to the late Elaine Salo, will be held from 1-2:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, in Mechanical Hall Gallery on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.
The panel discussion will remember Prof. Salo, associate professor of political science and international relations and of women and gender studies at UD, who died Aug. 13, 2016. She called both South Africa and the U.S. home and was well-known as a feminist scholar and activist.
Prof. Salo was at the center of groundbreaking research and a loving community of friends, colleagues and students in both countries.
The symposium, “A ‘Grotesque Sense of Entitlement’: Trump, Zuma and Feminist Activism Against Sexual Assault in the United States and South Africa,” will feature discussions by some of her many colleagues and friends.
Speakers will include Gabeba Baderoon, associate professor of women’s, gender and sexuality studies at Pennsylvania State University, and Teresa Barnes, associate professor of history and of gender and women’s studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Baderoon also co-directs Penn State’s African Feminist Initiative, where Prof. Salo was known as an inspiration and a generous member of the community. Baderoon is the author of Regarding Muslims: from Slavery to Post-apartheid and is an Extraordinary Professor of English at Stellenbosch (South Africa) University.
Barnes holds degrees from Brown University and the University of Zimbabwe, and was a faculty member at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, for a decade. Her work focuses on gender, labor and higher education in southern Africa.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the African Studies Program, Center for Global and Area Studies, Department of Women and Gender Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences.
